Please join us for a special joint ILTS webinar hosted by the Pediatric Committee and the DCD Preservation & Machine Perfusion SIG, focusing on the critical gaps that remain in machine perfusion science and practice. This webinar will bring together leading experts to explore emerging

biomarkers, viability criteria, and strategies to expand the donor pool. This session will highlight practical insights and future directions that can shape the next era of liver transplantation.

How to assess liver graft viability in machine perfusion: A report from the frontline

Andrea Schlegel

Staff Surgeon, Cleveland Clinic

Dr. Andrea Schlegel is a transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Cleveland Clinic, internationally recognized for her work in organ preservation, mitochondrial injury, and viability assessment during machine perfusion. She leads a translational research program focused on improving graft utilization and developing objective biomarkers to guide clinical decision-making in liver transplantation. Trained across Europe, she brings a uniquely global and innovative perspective to advancing the field.

HOPE for children: Machine perfusion to expand the donor pool in pediatric liver transplantation

Xavier Muller

Staff Surgeon, Hospices Civils de Lyon

Dr. Xavier Muller is a transplant surgeon and researcher at the Hospices Civils de Lyon in Lyon, France, with a major focus on graft preservation, ex-situ liver splitting, and machine perfusion techniques in both adult and pediatric liver transplantation. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed studies on hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) and the optimal matching of donor grafts to recipients. His team has the leading experience of machine perfusion in pediatric liver transplantation.

Moderators:

Rebeca Sanabria Mateos

Consultant, Liver Surgery, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

Dr. Rebeca Sanabria Mateos is a consultant liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she cares for both adult and pediatric transplant patients. Her clinical and research interests focus on optimizing graft preservation, evaluating marginal and complex donors, and improving outcomes through innovative perfusion and viability-assessment strategies. She is recognized internationally for her contributions to advancing safe graft utilization in challenging transplant scenarios.

Stefania Camagni

Staff Surgeon, ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII

Dr. Stefania Camagni is an HPB and transplant surgeon at ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII in Bergamo, Italy, with a strong research focus on graft preservation, donation after circulatory death (DCD), and machine perfusion in liver transplantation. She has contributed to landmark studies on hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion and is actively involved in clinical trials evaluating perfusion technologies in transplant programs.
