Speaker Bio
Dr. Wine is a Professor of Pediatrics and Immunology, Clinician Scientist, and Head of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. He is also Senior Scientist at the SickKids Research Institute (Cell & Systems Biology Program) and co-Director of the SickKids IBD Centre.
Dr. Wine completed a Pediatric GI fellowship at SickKids, and a PhD in Cellular Microbiology at the University of Toronto and then spent almost 16 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton before returning to Toronto. In Edmonton he established a basic and translational lab, with multiple trainees at different levels and extensive national and international funding.
Dr. Wine’s clinical expertise is managing children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) with specific interest in gut microbes and diet, and how they relate to intestinal inflammation. This interest fits well with his laboratory research focus on mechanisms of microbial virulence related to IBD, and the complex interplay between diet, microbes, and disease, enabling translational bench-to-bedside research.
Dr. Wine is internationally recognized for both research and clinical aspects related to IBD. He was Co-Chair of the Canadian Children IBD Network (cidscann.ca; 2022-2025), where he is involved in multiple basic, translational, and clinical studies, and was on the Executive of the ESPGHAN Porto IBD Group (2018-2025). He also co-led the 2025 European (ESPGHAN/ECCO) guidelines for management of pediatric ulcerative colitis.
