Dr. Frances Tse is an Associate Professor and Chief of Service for Gastroenterology at Hamilton Health Sciences. After receiving her MD at the University of Calgary, she completed her Internal Medicine residency, Gastroenterology Fellowship, and MSc in Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McMaster University. She went on to complete two additional years of fellowship in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (EUS & ERCP) at McGill University in Montreal. She has been on staff at McMaster University since 2005. She was the Program Director for the Adult Gastroenterology Training Program from 2009-2015.
Her clinical, research and medical education efforts are focused in Therapeutic Endoscopy.
She specializes in pancreatic and biliary disorders with particular expertise in therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) including EUS-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) / fine needle biopsy (FNB) of mass lesions and EUS-guided interventions (celiac plexus block / neurolysis, drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts, etc.), as well as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of complex large polyps.
Her research interests lie primarily in the area of post-ERCP pancreatitis. She has published a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in this area. She serves as a methodologist in the guideline development process for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG). She has been involved in the process of integrating the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach in the development of high quality, evidence-based clinical guidelines in many areas including inflammatory bowel disease, wireless capsule endoscopy, dysphagia, colorectal cancer screening, bile acid diarrhea, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding for the CAG. She is the lead for the CAG Practice Affairs Committee. She is an Editor for the Cochrane Upper GI and Pancreatic Diseases Group and the Journal of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (JCAG). She is also a certified faculty for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology’s Skills Enhancement for Endoscopy (SEE™) Program that addresses gaps in the quality of endoscopy skills through Train the Colonoscopy Skills Improvement (CSI) and Train-the-Endoscopy-Training (TET) courses.
Dr. Tse has received several honors / awards during her career including the Watson Buchanan Clinician Educator Award, teaching award for GI residents, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Research & Outcomes & Effectiveness Award.
