Speaker Bio
Dr. Joëlle St-Pierre, MD, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Calgary and an alumna of the Advanced IBD Fellowship at the University of Chicago. With a PhD and post-doctorate in immunology on macrophage signaling and gut-immune crosstalk, she now integrates mechanistic insight with point-of-care intestinal ultrasound to advance precision care in IBD.
Her research focuses in on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and mesenteric “creeping fat” as immunometabolic drivers of disease. Dr. St-Pierre leads the Chicago Mesenteric Fat Index program and studies that correlates VAT volume with key adipokines, alongside GLP-1 and other metabolic hormones. Her overarching goal is to translate imaging and adipokine insights into VAT-targeted therapies to improve outcomes and quality of life for people living with IBD. She is also a co-investigator on the STOP-UC trial evaluating safe de-escalation of biologic therapy in deep remission, alongside Dr David Rubin. She has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers and her abstracts have garnered Poster of Distinction (DDW 2024) and Outstanding Presenter (ACG 2023) awards. She also serves on the IUSCAN Research Committee.
As an IBUS-certified intestinal sonographer, Dr. St-Pierre routinely uses IUS to monitor disease activity at the bedside and teaches Module 2 trainees in the international IBUS curriculum. She is also leading an IUS-based education program for GI and IBD fellows in Canada.
