Speaker Bio
Dr. Xavier Mas Orea is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Verdu Lab at McMaster University’s Farncombe Institute. He joined the group in 2024 to lead a project examining how pathological maternal microbiota during pregnancy shapes immune development in offspring.
He completed his PhD (2019–2023) at the Digestive Health Research Institute (IRSD) (university of Toulouse) under the supervision of Dr. Gilles Dietrich. His doctoral research explored the production of endogenous opioids by CD4⁺ T cells and their role in regulating inflammatory pain. This work established his expertise in mucosal immunology, flow cytometry, and complex in vivo models.

After earning his PhD, Dr. Mas Orea undertook a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in collaboration with the Imagine Institute in Paris, where he focused on developing and characterizing bone cancer models to assess the therapeutic potential of innovative nanoparticle-based treatments.

Building on his strong foundation in immunology and digestive health, his current research continues to advance our understanding of how early-life microbial exposures influence long-term immune system development.
