Speaker Bio
Kirk Bergstrom is an Assistant Professor and Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus), where he leads the Mucin Glycobiology Laboratory studying the formation and function of the glycosylated mucus network in humans and pre-clinical animal model systems. Specifically, Dr. Bergstrom uses genetic systems controlling mucus sugars in mice to understand how mucus glycosylation regulates host–microbial symbiosis in vivo to prevent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer. He has pioneered a non-invasive analytical platform using human fecal material to learn more about human MUC2 and how it changes structurally and functionally in human disease. Dr. Bergstrom is leveraging the knowledge gained from these systems to generate novel mucin-based therapies against IBD, colon cancer, and other diseases. Dr. Bergstrom’s past and current research support has come from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Gates Foundation, the Weston Family Foundation, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, GlycoNet, Biocodex, Michael Smith Health Research BC, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
