Giovanni Barbara, M.D. was trained in Bologna, Italy and partly in London, UK and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at McMaster University in Canada. He is currently Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Vice-Chair of the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences at the University of Bologna, Italy.
His main research interest focus on the translational and clinical aspects of neurogastroenterology, functional gastrointestinal disorders, gut microbiota and mucosal immunity. In these fields he has authored extensively in indexed peer-reviewed and review articles.
Giovanni Barbara has received national and international awards including the Master Award in Gastroenterology from the American Gastroenterological Association.
He currently serves as Member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Foundation, is past-President of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) and Chair of Gut Microbiota for Health.
