Ahmed M. Elsabbagh, MD, MS, MRCS, PhD is an internationally recognized transplant and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeon specializing in pediatric liver and intestinal transplantation, living donor liver transplantation, complex HPB surgery, and minimally invasive techniques. He serves as Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of Pediatric Transplant Education at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute – Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Organ Donation and Transplantation.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He brings advanced expertise in managing complex liver tumors, intestinal failure, and benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts, using both open and minimally invasive surgical approaches.
He completed surgical training at leading U.S. institutions including Mount Sinai Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, Henry Ford Hospital, and Georgetown University, where he completed a two-year ASTS-accredited fellowship in multi-organ transplant and HPB surgery. He previously served at Mansoura University in Egypt, home to one of the Middle East’s most active living donor liver and kidney transplant programs.
A strong advocate for academic medicine, Dr. Elsabbagh holds master’s and doctoral degrees and has received numerous national and international awards. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at global transplant and HPB surgery conferences. His research interests include organ preservation, ischemia-reperfusion injury, immune tolerance, microbiome in transplantation, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways.
Deeply committed to education and global outreach, Dr. Elsabbagh leads medical education initiatives across North America, Africa, and the Middle East. As founder and president of Donate Life Egypt, he promotes ethical organ donation and works to improve access and outcomes for organ transplantation. He has held leadership roles and committee roles in many international transplant societies.
