Professor Christian van Delden graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva in 1988. After basic research training, he completed a course in Internal Medicine and then a clinical specialization in infectiology at the University Hospitals of Geneva, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester, New York. Holder of the FMH specialist titles in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, he leads a fundamental research group at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva. Since 2015 he is responsible for the Unit of Transplantation Infectiology. Appointed as a Full Professor of the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva in 2018, he is also Deputy Chief of the Transplantation Service since 2020.
As co-founders of the Swiss Transplant Cohort (STCS), Prof. van Delden has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2006. He created and chaired the infectiology working groups of the STCS, as well as SwissTransplant from 2007 to 2017. He has been a member of the SwissTransplant Foundation Board since 2022.
Authors and co-authors of more than 250 scientific articles, his interests in clinical research concern infections in transplant patients. In basic research, he is more particularly interested in the modulation of bacterial virulence and the development of new therapeutic strategies against multi-resistant bacteria, including the search for new molecules, phage therapy and bacterial microbiome modulation.
