Vincenzo Mazzaferro is full Professor of Surgery at the University of Milan and Director of the Gastro-Intestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori (National Cancer Institute - INT) of Milan, Italy. He graduated cum laude at the University of Turin (Italy) and received his training in General Surgery and in Oncology at the University of Milan (Italy) and in Liver Surgery and Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh (USA). Along the years, he has developed several successful clinical and experimental projects in liver oncology and transplantation and leaded research projects focused on innovative approaches to liver diseases, particularly related to cancer. He has contributed to a large number of international collaborations. He is the inventor of the Milan Criteria for liver transplantation in hepatocellular carcinoma and in neuroendocrine tumors liver metastases, fostering in person the entire field of Transplant-Oncology. He has co-authored the EASL clinical practice guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma, the updated multi-expert BCLC algorithm and the Lancet Commission report on the Liver. He is among the few surgeons having received the EASL Recognition Award. The Italian Association of Cancer Research, the Société Française de Chirurgie Digestive, the American Association of Cancer Research, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the City of Milan also recognized his scientific and clinical contributions. He has served as Associated Editor for the Journal of Hepatology and authored more than 520 publications in international peer-reviewed medical Journals.
