Dr. Mina KOMUTA is a pathologist specialized in hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology, as well as liver transplantation. Dr. Komuta holds medical licenses in both Japan and Belgium and is board-certified in pathology.
She began her medical career as a gastroenterologist and developed a strong interest in the histological diversity of tumors through her clinical work in the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Her early research on HCC was carried out as a graduate student under the mentorship of Professor Masamichi Kojiro. She subsequently pursued liver pathology research as a postdoctoral fellow under Professor Roskams at KU Leuven, Belgium. Following this, she was appointed to a tenure-track position at KU Leuven and was later promoted to Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology, where she led the hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology division at St. Luc University Hospital.
Dr. Komuta is currently based in Japan, where she continues her work in pathological diagnostics, research, and medical education. Dr. Komuta contributed as a responsible author to several chapters—including iCCA—in the 6th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours, following her earlier involvement in the 5th edition. She also serves on several international and national committees, including the EASL-ILC iCCA Clinical Guideline panel, the ICCR Metastatic Liver Cancer Committee, and the Japanese Liver Cancer Management Guidelines. Additionally, she is the pathology lead for DILI and immune-related adverse events irAE.
Her current research focuses on the pathological heterogeneity of primary liver tumors and non-neoplastic liver diseases, including MASH, DILI, irAE, and AIH.
