Hermien Hartog is a consultant surgeon in adult and paediatric HPB and liver transplantation at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the Netherlands, where she has worked since 2023. She holds dual FEBS certification in HPB Surgery and Transplant Surgery, and a PhD from the University of Groningen.
Previously, she served as consultant surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham, UK (2020–2022), and at Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam (2014–2020), where she developed her expertise in complex liver graft utilisation, paediatric transplantation, waitlist dynamics and machine perfusion.
Her research and clinical philosophy focus on equity in waitlist outcomes, expanding access to transplantation through organ selection and patient-centred decision-making, and paediatric liver transplantation outcomes.
As ELITA Chair (2025–2027), Hermien leads the European Liver and Intestine Transplant Association in its mission to advance liver and intestinal transplantation across Europe. She is course director of the ELITA Split Liver Masterclass 2025.
